My name is Ronda Neary, I am a 70 year old widow who has suffered from type 2 diabetes for 38 years.
After many years of injecting insulin I’d had enough of needles, this resulted in a visit to my GP who said "OK this is what you do. Your diet is OK but to control your blood sugar levels with tablets you have to exercise a lot more than you are doing now" Great! I thought, as I did not have a car and walked everywhere I thought I was exercising enough, obviously not.
I was left with no alternative but to join a gym, I was terrified. Gyms were not places a woman of my age frequents; they were after all full of young beautiful things with firm lycra clad bodies weren't they?
With much apprehension off I went to the local ladies only gym. I found the staff most supportive and approachable. I explained my situation and what my goal was. I started off with circuit training and slowly progressed to use all the equipment much to my amazement.
My training to become a serious gym junkie started 5 years ago. It is now 4 years since I have had to inject insulin. I control my Blood sugar levels with tablets, diet and exercise.
As a pleasant side effect I have dropped 12 kilos, but am still a whole lot of woman. I am now stronger and fitter than I have been for many years. I really enjoy my time exercising (except for the cross trainer).
I try to go at least 3 times per week. Time I feel that is really well spent.
The staff monitors and change your program every 6-8 weeks to meet your needs. At the moment I am doing work on my balance because as you age this can be a problem.
I intend to continue with my exercising as it has made a huge difference to my health and lifestyle.
With the help of all the staff at EnVie I hope to be as fit and strong as I can be and to grow old as disgracefully as possible.
